What else we did on Shop Hop day....

It's just about impossible to hit the part of western Nebraska that we were in and not go to these three tourist spots. So our first stop of the day was Carhenge. And yes it is modeled after Stonehenge in England, although this attraction has no mysteries. We know why they built it and how and my boys loved going back there again. If you want to learn more about Carhenge, you can check it out here.

Carhenge 2017

They love the bench made out of tailgates from a pick-up

Next we made a stop at Scottsbluff National Monument. This model below was made from tiny layers of cardboard. Who has the patience to do that?

I was disappointed that we couldn't see the tracks from the Oregon Trail. Every time I've been there before we could see them. I don't know if it's eroded that much in the past few years or what.

Riding on the Oregon Trail; After we got to the front wagon we see a sign that says don't crawl on the animals. Maybe they need to move their sign so people can actually see it.

Checking out the view

You can't see here that Alex was grasping onto the wall tightly. He was just sure we were going to fall off the "mountain". I knew he didn't like heights but I didn't realize that this would be so frightening for him. Preston wanted to walk around some more but it was pretty windy and every time the wind would gust Alex kind of freaked out. So we didn't stay up long. The views looking out onto the plains of Wyoming and Nebraska were definitely beautiful though.

On the way home we stopped at Chimney Rock. The sign at the visitor's center was not comforting to Alex. We tried to assure him that we probably wouldn't see any snakes since it was still winter. Trust me, he never quit watching out for them.

We got to the visitor's center 15 minutes before closing so we decided we didn't want to pay an admission fee for that but this lovely quilt was just inside the door. (smile)

My aunt snapped a picture of me and the boys, my hair is a sign that it was a windy day. Love Chimney Rock in the background though.

A sad day in our community

A prairie fire started on Saturday and was stopped by our very hard working volunteer firemen. They worked all night to get it under control and went home about 6 am on Sunday morning. About 11;30 the winds picked up and stoked the embers. The fire gained a whole new momentum and took off. Within a very short time it was into a housing area.

We heard several mutual aid calls for firemen from neighboring towns. I heard that we had over 100 firemen from 20 departments and they fought hard all afternoon, but the dry grass and the high wind were tough opponents. By the end of the day 8 homes were lost as well as outbuildings and equipment. It could have been so much worse. They saved most of the homes and there was no loss of life. But I'm sure it was hard for them to lose what they did.

One of the homes lost belonged to a woman who I call a friend. She welcomed me into the community when we first moved to the lake and she led our Thimbleberries quilt club. I am so sad that she lost everything. But if I know her she will be counting her blessings that she is still alive.

Sometimes life on the prairie can be hard, but the people here are wonderful. There have already been accounts set up at local banks to help the families who have lost everything.

Most of all today I am grateful for our emergency personnel. Most of our firemen and EMT's are volunteers who still have full time day jobs. They give so much to our community and I hope they know today that they are appreciated more than words can ever say.

Preferred Customers Save Money!

Sometimes people ask me what are the benefits of becoming a preferred customer. If you don't want to become a Plexus Ambassador and get wholesale prices as well as the opportunity to build a business, becoming a Preferred Customer is the next best thing. Plexus makes it very easy to save money while you're working at becoming healthy!

Shop Hop Day 3- Western Nebraska

 Pat's Creative in Hemingford
This was a fun drive out in the country, no cell service. We loved it. The boys made friends with the dogs and got to go look at the cattle. My aunt was visiting so I drug her along with us.

I made a sock monkey quilt for one of my granddaughters but this one was really cute!

 This one was absolutely gorgeous!

 So fun!

Platte Valley Vac & Sew- Scottsbluff

I literally had to drag my boys out of this store because they got in a conversation with a man about tornadoes and North Platte and Ogallala, and who knows what else.

Time for a coffeebreak- the wifi password is "drinkmorecoffee".

 Last store of the day-
Prairie Pines Quilt Shop- Gering

We mixed in a couple of fun stops for the boys. I will write about that in another post. In the meantime I hope you enjoy the virtual quilt tour.
